I remember waking up to the alarm clock on the morning of September 11, 2001. I was about 20 weeks pregnant with Lauren, my first child. It was early, and I just remember hearing a panicked voice on the radio. Something about airplanes, New York.....my husband and I turned on the TV. We could not believe what we saw. Dave stayed home from work that day and we watched the sadness all day. That evening I felt Lauren kick for the first time. I had been eagerly awaiting that moment and it was a great joy to feel her move on that very sad day. I thought I would post my flag cake to commemorate the heros of that day! Thank you to all the people who risked their lives to save others! And I pray for all the families today that lost loved ones.
I make this flag cake every 4th of July. IT is soooooooo good and beautiful too! This recipe is from another one of my favorite chefs, Ina Garten. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/flag-cake-recipe/index.html I love her style of cooking! And all her stuff is so good but simple! The key to this cake is to use the best possible ingredients and of course fresh berries. Obviously in July they are the freshest! So keep this one in mind for next years 4th of July party! Or make it anytime!! Enjoy!!

Love this post......makes you really appreciate having your family here with you. We went to the beach with the kids and I felt so blessed to have them playing and running around. Those dudes at ground zero are true heros and I bet they would eat the BLEEP outta that cake if you'd brought it that day! Thanks Bino!
